On 4/14/09, I predicted Arizona would be competing for the PAC10 championship in 2 years (http://uschoopsmessageboard.yuku.com/sreply/10155), now that MoMo and Wiliams have are going to Arizona, MG has basically assured that this will happen. Pretty amazing that Arizona now has 5 top 100 level recruits next year. Just gives you hope in how quickly USC can rebuild.

Posts: 228 06/30/09 1:18 PM	No one is saying to force them to come to USC. People are just mad that they were allowed to sign with a conference opponent. And, heck, especially when we were in transition, they should have waited to give players their releases until they spoke with the new coach (i.e., O'Neill would have the first option of keeping those kids before the other coaches could speak with them). That is a VERY common practice. If KSU and Texas A&M would have granted LOI's so quickly, we probably would have gotten Beasley and Jordan, because they asked for their releases when their coaches left and wanted to come here. But those schools made the recruits first meet with the replacement coach (and in KSU's case, gave the job to Bealey's guy) and they stayed at those schools. And I don't get this, from some folks, argument that a kid should be free to choose to go to whatever school he wants. Well, that is just not the case once you sign an LOI. No one makes you sign these, but when you do there are rules attached to it.

Posts: 293 06/30/09 1:58 PM	The athletic department was reasonably consistent in their treatment of both our male and female basketball recruits. Once Sidney was "mutually" allowed to go (despite being cleared by USC just a few weeks earlier) the writing was on the wall. I'm not a big fan of slavery. I also don't like the NCAA and believe the decision to admit mediocre academic institutions like U of A and ASU into the Pac 8 was a mistake. What is done is done. None of the players that have committed to Arizona are in fact committed to Arizona. Momo has a history of changing his mind; Derrick Williams was reputed to have wanted to attend USC for some time. It is an extreme long shot but after the dust settles I hope our staff at least attempts to reconnect with these two. Sean Miller has no NBA experience. Does Mr. Jones really want to sit on the bench behind Nic Wise? Does Derrick really understand what it's like to live in a small town with limited nightlife? Do Jones and Williams understand that Arizona is under NCAA investigation for Olsen violations and may lose scholarships and/or receive other punishments? Do the parents of these players, as I understand Derrick's mom met with KO, really recognize the difference in value between an Arizona and USC degree if their sons don't make the NBA? I don't know the answer of any of these questions. What I do know is that our assistants have relationships with some of these players and I hope they use them as best they can. If KO is not Darth Vader, as he claims, both Jones and Williams will have better opportunities at USC than they will at Arizona. Neither have signed a LOI, both are still available. SC has a history in multiple sports of excluding Pac-10 foes when releasing LOIs and allowing transfers. From what I recall, the athlete has recourse via appeal to the university admin. I don't believe that SC granted a free release as some sort of sacrifice to the NCAA gods. The free release only makes sense as a stipulation for a coaching change. Thus, Noel was excluded and the others were not. Noel should have waited to ask for his release. Turk said it best. These kids are not making smart decisions. MoMo would get at least double the minutes of PT at SC next season. But, Garrett completely botched the navigation through this turmoil and should resign immediately.

I recall hearing that PC did not want to release (meaning that the player would have to sit out two years per PAC 10 rule rather than one year per NCAA rule) but that PC was overruled by a hearing. Holland only sat one year.

Posts: 228 07/01/09 5:50 AM	I don't think the Sidney situation is comparable to the release of the other recruits at all, nor should the fact that the administration decided not to take a kid who could land the university in even more hot water be viewed as a precursor to how a competent athletic department (and president) should handle signed recruits with no "issues".

I think it is FAR mote likely that the difference in this situation wasn't the text of the LOIs, but rather who else was getting involved in making these decisions that wasn't involved before.

Posts: 397 07/01/09 3:17 PM	I'm as pi$$ed at what has happened to the basketball program. we spend $140M of USC athletic supporter funds on a top rate basketball facility, hire a top coach, go to the NCAA's three straight years and then dump the program in the hamper because of a bunch of lies from Yahoo sports, founded by stanford people, and run by stanford people when we could have answered some of these bogus charges. Coach wanted to but was not allowed too. I don't get it, but I know this, the decision to let the recruiting class go and force the coach out , was made at a lot higher level than Mike Garrett.

Heck, he started pushing for an on campus arena as soon as he was appointed athletic director. I think that all the bad pub re Bush and Mayo, made the higher ups panic and they decided to throw a bone to the NCAA. Big mistake. Had Floyd been allowed to answer the obviously bogus charge that he delivered money to an agent for Mayo this would have stopped the feeding frenzy, unless Yahoo had corroborating evidence, which they obviously did not or they would have come out with it. USC panicked and decided to sacrifice a year or two of basketball instead. This really pi$$es me off. No way, no how, Garret made this decision on his own imho. As Rod Dedeaux once said "Everyone hates the Trojans and thats the way we like it." Time to circle wagons, rebuild the program and kick some Pac Ten butt. As much as I realize the 9 dwarfs and the rest of the BC S are jealous of USC, I didn't realize that it has morphed into sheer, pure hatred. Ron Silver, a senior writer for SI, and Cal grad, even stated on the radio, and I quote, "I don't care if USC is guilty or not, punish them,. they deserve it anyway." Pat Forde and that wop Dick Vitale, I can call him a wop because I am one too, both had USC guilty of major violations re Mayo with no proof at all. Pathetic.
