While the Pac-10 doesn't have any terrible teams, it really doesn't have many good teams either. This UCLA team looks quite a bit worse than last season's version.

I'm not exactly sure what is happening with the program.

Its hard to get it inside when your offense is set up by half court. But thats our great offense.

We didn't come ready to play and UCLA did. They have been dominating us on the boards and defensively the Bruins have been outstanding. Hackett, Lewis, and
Gibson look as bad as I've seen them play. We need to mix things up in the second half by playing a junk defense, maybe box and one or even a zone defense
to change things up.

We need to run, We DONT have a half court offense. Our gaurds can't shoot nor drive to the basket. We need to run and run, Coaches coach according to their
personal, so why do we walk the ball up and run our weak half court sets?
Im not a fan of Donte but i'd rather see him in there pushing the ball up the court, then seeing Hackett turning the ball over everytime. RUN,RUN,RUN... |

Couldn't agree more on our offensive offense! | #4

I have finally settled down after the debacle last night. So here goes.
Floyd's offense sucks! Actually it's probably pretty good, that is, if you're the other team playing against it. First off, it's a shame that Daniel a pretty good two guard is forced to run the point. It also goes without saying that DeMar is totally hand tied in this pass pass offense. Regardless of how everyone feels about Donte, he can push the ball and get into the paint. Everyone needs to watch and count how many times we bring the ball up court and Daniel makes no attempt to penetrate. We pass and pass the ball on the outside and don't even look to the basket. Again he is not a point. And guess what. Next year NOTHING CHANGES. This team was completely flat last night. How can this be. Ucla strengths, the three ball, defense and collison pushing the ball up court. We didn't guard the three, did nothing but pass pass on the perimeter. THERE IS A REASON WHY ATTENDANCE IS DOWN, THIS TEAM IS NOT FUN TO WATCH. It is very predictable. Has floyd recruited better players to SC, yes. But he refuses to let them run. This will come back to haunt us in future recruiting. CAN YOU IMAGINE DEMAR IN AN UPTEMPO OFFENSE? I am so pissed right now, I have to stop and get a drink. |

UCLA has arguably the best and most disciplined defense in the Pac-10, if not the country. Your complaints about Hackett's inability to drive and kick
require the same skill set to lead a break. There were more than a few times last night, where SC tried to run the ball and Daniel/Dwight/Donte were picked
clean after crossing mid-court.
I do have to agree with the many people that felt the ball was too far away from the key - looked like at one point we were running UNC's four corners. The games we have lost, there were two common denominators: 1) No guard penetration (by USC) and 2) more than 12 or so turnovers. I think that Floyd initially wanted to get it going inside, but our guards couldn't get it there... they were content to pass or dribble out around mid-court. I think all of us agree that our only favorable mismatch was at the post. Even Washington vs. Aboya should have been at least a wash. But as I focused on Taj setting up at the block, all Drago did was front him and Taj would meekly allow it to happen. Washington was fighting for position, but our guards/wings wouldn't give him a chance.... no dribble entry, and the passes were slow.... we seemingly never hit a player ON THE CUT.... the pass always seems to be late. As for giving up open three's, I strongly disagree with that assessment. Drago was making those three's from 24 feet out. |

amen sc66. our point guard, angelo johnson LEFT in august. do you know how much of a difference he would have made? you can't get PG help in august. we
STILL i don't think have had all of our players play together for a game, with dwight, marcus, and leonard being injured.

Disagree, that's a pretty good UCLA team. | #8

They beat up on Cal and Stanford and we were not on our game. I wouldn't extend our communal self thrashing to the fact that they aren't good. They
are 13-1 in Pauley. Pretty good in anybody's book. If you took a Duke, NC, Oklahoma or whoever and brought them into Pauley, I don't think Vegas
would put the Baby Blues down by 5. So we had a bad game, we still control our own destiny and will be in the big dance.
Just my toughts. |

Well, it's hard to disagree about which team has the better players right now | #9

but I think the biggest issue is at the point guard.
Yes, SC has been hurt severely by injuries. However, even without the injuries, I think there is a legitimate argument that SC runs a boring, often ineffective offense. In college ball, it all starts at the point. Hackett tries hard and he is a fine 2Guard. But he has limitations at point. Nobody seems to set things up and get the guys moving. I agree that the starters were fatigued and SC really missed Marcus Johnson. So, tell me why Simmons did not get more minutes? Why not try Diarra? Seriously, he could not have done worse than Taj did last night. Taj, a very good player, had nothing left--not a thing. For that matter, with the starters all used up and trying to run on empty, why not even give Cameron a try? He did play college ball at BYU and he can jump. As Nuttinbutnett aluded to, with the kind of athletes that SC has, trying to run this whatever half court offense that SC has, the kids play like their hands are tied. I have to wonder about Floyd's ability to coach offense with a fine group of athletic kids. How do his offensive sets really put the jumping jacks and superb athletes in the best position to excel? MichaelDavidson wrote:Point guard play is not the biggest issue. Gabe wasn't that much better than Daniel is and we survived. The biggest issue to me is the lack of good open shot shooters. The 2005-06 team had 3 guys who could all drill the open outside shot and when combined with Taj inside, they became a real load for any defense to handle. One outside shooter and an inside guy is tough but you can defend. Two outside shooters and one inside guy makes you real hard to defend. 3 outside shooters and one inside guy and you are impossible to defend.

Im sorry but Hackett couldn't hold pruitt's jock strap. Not even a close comparison, Pruitt was much quicker better ball handler, more athletic and way
better shooter.

No argument about the value of outside shooters | #12
|
Your point is well taken. As to whether or not it is more important than a point guard, I will say this. It's close and hard to decide. Both are critical .
But, without the great outside shooters, and this team has none, getting penetration and dishing off to the guys inside or at least close enough to score is on
the point guard and this team is weak there. MJD

amazing amount of general agreement-Hackett should be a sixth man | #13
|
in a more ideal world. He cannot play two guard either. Diarra should have played. Wilkinson should never go in when we need points.
coach floyd hasn't shown the ability to make any kind of half court set work for us. as one who didn't think Mayo showed that much last year, the point has been made that he looks like a different guy released from Floyd. He is now practically the leader of an NBA team. next year, even with the loss of Taj, and the return to health of everyone, Coach Floyd will have to show something or interest in USC basketball will continue to ebb. |

to run n gun, you need a PG and some shooters. plus, that style isn't conducive to defense either. we can be loyola marymount and score 141 and give up
148, like they did to LSU. might be fun to watch but not going to win championship. we need a PG and some shooters. hence, we slow it down more this year and
also have some good defenders. it's damned if you do, damned if you don't in that we have strong low post players in taj, alex on the way, derrick
williams, and leonard. next year some help is on the way as noel johnson is supposed to be a really good shooter and gerrity is going to really help or i guess
paul westphal is a bad coach that cant recognize talent since he recruited him. plus, if we get sidney and stephenson, we'll be loaded.

You obviously don't follow the team. Why should Hackett be the sixth man? He is our leader and has done a good job running the point. Diarra is not playing
for a reason, we have better options in Nikola and Keith. Taj may come back, you don't know he is leaving just yet.

If you can't shoot.... | #16
MichaelDavidson wrote: You can't drive. Defenses will be so packed inside there will be no where to go if you tried. Besides, you don't dribble penetrate to dish off inside, you dribble chase to kick off to a spot up shooter who has to be able to drill the open shot. If he can't, then you are forced to have manufacture baskets off of your half court offense and that will not work all the time. You have to be able to shoot the ball. What I am really surprised at is we don't post opposing point guards up on the block. Daniel is the biggest point guard in the league and yet he can't post up worth a tinker's damn. We are a really big basketball team and we don't take advantage of that fact. |

..there has been at least one meltdown a year when this team has looked as badly. Here are some of those.
2006-UCLA 45-66 2007-Stanford 50-65, Oregon 57-81in the PAc-10 tournament. . hat was the sweet 16 year. 2008-Mercer 81-96, WSU 58-73 and 50-74, KSU 67-80. One thing about Floyds teams is that seem to be able to bounce back from bad games. Hopefully that happens this year. |
