Will Diarra be a contributing member this fall? |

When he came in, some said, he needs a year to improve before he can play. Now more than a year has past. So wondering.

If he is coachable at all he should run the floor well, be a | #1

decent rebounder and potential shot blocking threat and doubt he will be another cromwell but I am sure there are strong opinions about him out there on the
board.

What are you considering a contributing member?
I've heard he should be able to play at least 10-15 minutes a game next year. I haven't seen him play since the fall, so will be interested to see him this summer. |

For what it's worth, somebody I know randomly started talking to Floyd this past season, right around the NCAA tournament. Without any prompting about
Diarra, Floyd started raving about Diarra, saying he'd be doing big things in college basketball. I've read a lot of people here basically imply
he'll be a stiff for 5 years, however I thought it was interesting that Floyd made a point to talk about Diarra's ability.

Coach likes his progress. You just don't know how the kid will play since he hasn't had any game experience.

he can play a back-up center by scoring few baskets, block a shot or two, and grab a half dozen rebounds.
Hope he can do this. Fight on! |

Hopefully he can bring in what SC has been lacking for a very very long time | #6

and that's post depth off the bench. The main reason why Gibson picks up so many fouls quickly is that since he's forced to play big minutes, he
doesn't have the luxury to get any rest during halves. I like the potential rotation of Washington, Diarra, and Cunningham. Should help a lot next season.

Thanks for the memory…an observation | #7

Since the beginning of the Boyd era, back in'67…some 1.2K games ago, nothing can compare to the yucks that were associated with the 'starters no play' exhibition game against Fresno Pacific when we were 'edged' by some 21 points. You remember the game…it was the one that many 'loyal' Trojan fans (at least 1/3rd of those 'big-buckers' who sit courtside) left 'en mass' prior to the fat lady singing (zings intended). The situation…The ball was passed to Mr. Diarra in our offensive end of the court. He holds the ball with eyes big as saucers…deer in the headlights thing...and time seems to stop. After a momentary Huh?, an opponent finally runs up to him and, almost ceremoniously, removes the rock from his possession and proceeds down the court toward his basket. It was not jerked out of his hands mind you, but more an Alphonse and Gaston act. Mamadou remained transfixed on the spot, staring aimlessly off into space. Well, you can't imagine what occurred with some of the hard-core fans in my immediate vicinity. No rancor, as one might expect as in, "WTF are you doing?"…just a massive amount of guffaws by many of us who possess a 'take no prisoners' mentality, almost to the point of falling out of our seats and being unable to focus on the next immediate series of plays …laughter brings tears to one's eyes. There was instant bonding in the stands for many of us. The one thing that seemed to be in common was a gigantic SEG (S**t Eating Grin) on all of our kissers. I did not see Mr. Diarra perform in the exhibition game against the boys from Sinaloa…only the 15 minutes against Floyd's ol' bud from Fresno Pacific and three other games (that counted) where a sum total of 10 minutes was played. Far be it from me to pass judgment based upon such a limited 'N', but before Mamadou is anointed as a 'stiff' or conversely as the '2nd coming' we should probably tend to implement the paraphrased MJD trademark of…"Only time will tell". Bottom line…for me (and a few others) it was the most amusing SC hoops incident observed over the past 4+ decades…yes, even better than Morrison jumping off the roof of Julies back in '82. Funny how just a word, phrase, etc. can conjure up memories. Thank you Mr. Diarra. For that scant 5-8 seconds or so, you ranked right up there with Charlie C. /Lars/ |

Watch out for 'Dou | #8 | ||
|
Anyone who was at Midnight Madness at the start of last season got to get a glimpse of 'Dou's potential. That was before the hernia injury and
operation. I think that the Fresno game was very shortly after Dou was cleared to practice so it is really not much of a surprise that he would have the deer
in the headlights look out on the court. The kid can run the court like Abdoulaye, he can actually dribble the ball well for a big man, and he is a legit 7
footer with the wingspan to match. Rumor is that the kid once hit 7 3 pointers in a high school game, to which I say why shoot 3's when you're 7 feet
tall, but none the less it shows that he can shoot the rock. At Midnight Madness he showed some nice baseline dunks where he left the floor from outside the
key and used the "span" to throw it down. Dou has much more athleticism than most 7 footers and I agree with CTF that his potential is nearly
unlimited. I believe that he will be the surprise player and contributor of next season.

TrojanG2, I sure hope you are correct. If he can contribute big time as your post suggests he will be a huge, huge, plus.
SCLarry, As far as the second most amusing USC Hoops incident of recent decades, I would have to go with the first time Kostas Charisis was sent into a game. He ripped off his warmups and ran out on to the court with his jersey on backwards; talk about a green player |

It seems that the Kostas thing... | #10

...gives the two of us us a chuckle at least once every year as we reminisce....a very close 2nd indeed. We were both fortunate enough to have viewed it in person. The Mamadou reminded me of one of my little guys playing his first game of T ball. He hit the ball...ran to first base...then ran past 2nd base, taking off
like a bat for deep center field in spite of Dad and others screaming for him to come back. Guess he was trying to emulate his old man, who, in those days
(olden times), as a callow youth, had a tough time getting past 2nd base with the young chickies.
