Hey, both Arizona and UCLA hate the guy. |
Lead | ||
|
I'm good with that. Imagine the hysteria if we take some games from them. They will commit ritualistic suicide. OBTW, he is yells and shouts and is
emotional on the sidelines. OooooK. I understand from the Baby Blues, that he's demanding and thinks he's in charge. He's unkind to bunnys and
doesn't pay them enough props. Welllllll, I am OK with that as well. I listened to what he had to say and I am good with it. Oh and some people have
friends from AZ don't like him. If he plays hard defense and gets kids like Washington and Stepheson to play to their potential. Hey, I am good with that
as well. He recruits well in the East, has an east coast mentality about playing tough basketball, I am also OK with that. Sounds like the school gave him a
full up briefing on the investigation and he chose to take the job. Hell, I am really OK with that. If Dixon didn't want the job, so be it. Same with
the kids that left. Give me a coach that wants the job and some kids that want to play. I am sort of tired of whiners and gloom and doomers. And also OBTW,
Percy Miller's name is Percy. Give the kid the respect that he deserves for hacking the load when others don't.

..hated the Carroll hire and said the fpollowing:
"Mike Garrett really blew it." "The guy Carroll knows nothing about coaching college ball (Pete had 10 years in college ball coaching at the time)." "Petes a loser at .500 ball" (he was actually above .500 and had the same type record in the same division as Marv Levy, Jimmie Johnson and Bill Parcells during his tenure as HC at New England). I liked Pete because he was a detail guy that stressed defense and that was new to the PAC-10. Kevin does the same like Howland and thats not a bad thing. I dont know if Kevin will perform but I wish I had taken all the nergatives down that were said about Carrol lin 2001, so I think I will keep track of these statements for my own archival perusal from time to time. |

OK, then, Gary, if you are going to hold other people accountable, why don't you state how you think O'Neill will do? It is only fair.

A lot of people didn't like the PC hire, but I think there was a lot more speculation and unknown with that hire. He didn't have the Head Coach college
resume to look at as a base for making opinions on his hire. The negative opinions on Kevin O'Neill are more valid. Why? Because he was a HC of a college
team just 2 years ago. Some of the questions surround PC, like how will he relate to college players, how will he recruit have already been answered in this
case.

It was an orgy of distaste exacerbated by a prior bad coach in Hackett. There were flat out accusations of Mike G blowing it again with 500 negative faxes sent
into the ADs office. We are talking about Trojan Football here. No one knew Pete but they sure formed negative opinions quickly.
Kevin was 19-15 with Arizona in 2007-2008 talking over for Olson. He had Arizona in the NCAA and actually was named as eventual successor to Olson, who then changed his mind. Kevin beat USC 80-69 and ranked teams WSU 65-55 and Texas A&M 78-67, but lost close ones to ranked teams UCLA by 1, Kansas by 4 and Stanford by1. Thats what got his team to the NCAAs. Go to the ESPN site and see what Katz has to say about Kevin.

Kevin will do at least what Robinson did with Oregon State and have a .500 team or above next year. Isn't that what the rave was here?
He will have defensive players like Stephenson, Simmons, Washington playing very tough and hard D. He could make a postseason tournament like the NIT, and do better the year after.

O'Neill and Arizona | #10
GaryTD wrote:O'Neill was named as Olson's successor, and then spent a large part of that '07-'08 season creating a lot of turmoil within the program. He had trouble with both the AD and a lot of alumni. He turned off a lot of people, and Arizona changed it's mind on O'Neill and the "eventual successor" tag was removed and he was shown the door. Even if Olson has not returned, O'Neill would not have been retained as the Arizona head coach. I'm willing to give O'Neill a chance, but I'm very, very disappointed with the choice, particularly after having been teased with the possibility of Jamie Dixon and Lon Kruger. |

not to mention the fact that Pete Carroll was at the very least a very personable and player-friendly coach.
completely different situation. I wish I could share their enthusiasm but clearly this is NOT a hire to be enthused about. Even if it works out, there is a definite ceiling here. This is a stop-gap measure hire, but even so there were other, better, options. |

Arizona became a less talented team once O'Neill left (lost Jared Bayless), yet put up a better record without him as a coach. IMO, going 19-15 when you
have a core of Nic Wise, Budinger, Jordan Hill and Jared Bayless isn't an accomplishment to put on the frig.

You do realize that... | #13

Budinger and Hill and Wise were all a year older and better last year?
And Arizonas better record was 19-13 regular season verus 18-13, and 9-9 conferene versus 8-10 the year before? Thats not a real strong argument. |

Yeah, even the Zona Republic writer acknowledges that O'Neill went 19-15 at Zona with 19-15 talent. They had no bench. Lute had a stroke and went crazy,
but still controlled the program. The Zona program went crazy. O'Neill was simply caught in the crossfire. Blaming O'Neill for getting a dysfunctional
Zona program to the tourney is quite ridiculous. Lute's insanity destroyed Zona, not Kevin O'Neill. That's like saying MJ leaving USC destroyed the
program. Everyone who blames O'Neill at Zona is confusing a symptom with the disease.

a winless pac-10 season last year. completely different situation, not a three year to the NCAAs team in Los Angeles with a brand new arena, and anyway not
many were calling for Robinson. I don't believe he was a good fit at all either but at least it would have been good PR.
I am not saying O'Neill won't guide this team to .500 (i certainly hope he does) who the hell is going to play PG and score points is beyond me. Donte Smith, Marcus Simmons, Dwight Lewis, Alex Stephenson, and Leonard Washington is a decent line up (well, it could be decent). Besides Vucivich, who comes off of the bench? Diarra? Evan Smith? hopefully Marcus Johnson comes back, but that still leaves us with 7 players. And O'Neill will NOT play the other guys. At UofA, he made it clear that if he initially didn't think much of the bench, he would not play them. He routinely played 6-7 players I believe and publically stated that the reason he doesn't sub more is because he doesn't "like to watch bad basketball". I forgot Kasey Cunningham, but for him to play and stay healthy all season is a longshot. what should really be sticking out is this is a Bibby-esque/Hackett personality hire, and MG should have known better. recruits apparently already knew. |

I guess we need to have a couple different standards | #17
|
We should have one standard to judge the performance of KO based on the cards he was dealt--no matter what I think of the hire, I can't blame our new coach
for any of the crap he is going to have to deal with. The other standard would be where the program ends up in relation to what where we thought it would have
been had this whole situation that last couple months been handled correctly. But that goes to Garrett/Sample, not our new coach.
