Posts: 874 04/29/09 11:59 AM	Tags : None C: Stepheson, Vucevic, PF: (Taj if he returns) Washington, Cunningham, Williams (Can play some SF) SF: (Marcus Johnson?) N. Johnson, Smith SG: Lewis, Simmons PG: Jones, Gerrity (O'Connor?) 11 scholarships are taken for next year with the only known outstanding offer to Dominique O'Connor. Without Taj, this team will be fighting to stay in the upper half of the PAC10. Luckily the PAC10 is going to be downright awful next year. CAL, UCLA, UW will almost certainly be 1,2,3. IMO 4-10 will be all bunched together. Oregon has lots of talent and could compete for 1,2 or 3 but have a horrible coach. OSU is gaining talent with a good coach. ASU, Arizona, USC are all losing a lot of talent but bringing in some quality players. WSU and especially Stanford will struggle to win.

Posts: 157 04/29/09 2:10 PM	Still have good depth. I'm not sure that I agree that this team will struggle to make the PAc-10 upper echelon. I think this team will be competitive, but so many players are unproven, there is no way to predict. If Alex plays as well as advertised, if Leonard improves, if Dwight becomes a leader, if one or two of the freshmen contribute meaningfully, then this team can finish top 3 in conference.

Posts: 801 04/29/09 3:16 PM	We'll be competitive next season. The toughest guy to replace is going to be Hackett. He did a little of everything for us. Lamont Jones is going to have his hands full as a true freshman. Mike Gerrity will also get a lot minutes once he becomes eligible. I'm still hoping that we'll sign Dominique O'Conner to help out at the point. Losing Demar hurts, but he didn't start playing really well until the PAC-10 tournament. Dwight will have to step up as a leader on this team. He will probably be our leading scorer and go to player. Alex Stepheson will really help on the defensive end with his shot blocking presence. He will also be a great rebounder for this team. I'm hoping Stepheson will also contribute on the offensive end as well. If Taj doesn't come back, look for Nicola Vucevic to step up. I was really impressed with his game last year and I think he'll get better once he develops some upper body strength. Leonard Washington will also be a key player with his rebounding and interior play. Marcus Simmons will be our defensive stopper once again. Let's hope Marcus Johnson gets another year of eligibility, if not Noel Johnson will probably get a lot of minutes at small forward. Noel Johnson is a great perimeter shooter and let's hope he adapts to the Division 1 level quickly. I'm really excited about Derrick Williams. I haven't seen him in person yet, but what I've seen on video is very impressive. He can be a very good player in the PAC-10.

Posts: 194 04/29/09 6:20 PM	yeah, a cycle of you complaining every post. it's the coach's fault that demar is a lottery pick, that taj is 24 yrs old and wants to make some money, and that hackett is not the brightest bulb and that the NCAA will take forever and a day to rule on marcus. you complain about the roster, now we have alex stepheson, lamont jones, noel johnson, derrick williams (all top 70 players) joining this year and still whine. go back to your UCLA board.

Williams is ranked 74 by ESPN, 94 by Scout and NOT ranked in the Rivals 150. Momo is ranked 68 by Rivals and NOT ranked by Scout or ESPN.

No one and doners in this class now that Renardo is gone. MoMo, Noel and Derrick all together for 3 years? Led by upperclassman and Sam Clancy clone Leonard Washington? Add in DoMo? This is a group that can take us deeper into the tournament, I think.

And let's even go with recruiting. Are you saying that since Demar was likely a one and done, we shouldn't have taken him this year? Are you seriously saying that? If Taj leaves after 3 years of solid performances, are you saying he shouldn't have been recruited. Are you saying Hackett, who came in a year early or we would have been f*cked after Ryan died, should not have been recruited even thought absolutely no one said he was a legitimate candidate to leave early at the time? Now don't then point to guys like Donte etc. leaving, because I cannot believe you cared at all if they would have stayed. Let us all know what the coaches did to cause our impact players to leave.

Posts: 194 04/30/09 7:49 AM	Ok, you're right, if they aren't all ranked in the top 100 by every publication, the players aren't any good. Rick Pitino must be a dummy for offereing MoMo Jones. What does he know about talent? Also, the Jordan Classic had 24 players and MoMo was one of them. I guess that would make him one of the top players in the country, right? Maybe my logic is off. Roy Williams is also a dummy for signing Stepheson. What does he know about talent? Williams scored 26 against the top talent in LA. I guess that was a mirage. I guess we should advocate the coaches putting guns to the heads of players to force them to stay. We should also fault them for getting players to campus that are good enough and make them better to play professionally, be it the NBA or overseas. The arguments of a select few on this board are contradictory and ridiculous to say the least. What other schools reload as quickly as we do? We lose Nick Young and Gabe Pruitt to the NBA, next year make the tournament. Then lose Mayo and Jefferson, next year make the tournament. Then lose Derozan and maybe Gibson to the NBA, with Hackett overseas. We have a good nucleus next year. Show me other schools outside the top 10 that can say they did that. Oregon lost some players and they won 8 games this year. I could go on and on. You cant control injuries and you cant force people to give up their dreams. Give it a rest, you're embarrassing yourselves.

And don't have a sense of SC Basketball history. So our coaches shouldn't be attempting to recruit top players???? Let's have a team of walk-ons or players no one wants?? These are the same people that criticize Pete Carroll for "stockpiling talent".... Of course they are the first ones that would also be complaining if Floyd didn't recruit this type of talent and would be calling for his head if SC were goiing 10-22 or something. Having followed SC hoops since around 1969 I have seen first hand the attempts to "build a competitive program", and the missed opps to build on a successful yr be it Stan Morrsion, George Raveling, and most recently with Bibby and the squad earlier this decade. If you want to see the Rich Grande, Bob Erbst, and Dean Jones' types playing at SC again, forget about trips to the NCAA's ( by the way no offense at those guys, but all 3 were adequate at best). I don't think any of us SC fans want them to be going to the NIT, or some of these joke post season tourneys that came up this year. Didn't Yahoo sponsor something??? Let's get the program to the point where it is not only competitive, but a THREAT to do some damage in the NCAA's on a REGULAR basis Hey, would've loved to have seen Taj, Daniel, Demar, and befiore them Nick and Gabe stay. But they do have lives to lead and get on with. And no one can deny that Mayo wasn't ready to play in the NBA right? So all those that complain about "roster turnover" probably same ones that are constantly hyperventilatingabout most things, "oh the Lakers lost a game, uhuhuh the fottball team only won by 3 touchdowns instead of 5, ohohoh the sky is falling....."Get a clue already. Let's enjoy the winning and talent while it happens, and I'm talking about all LA sports, If you can't, move to Boston, those fans back there are the "kings" when it comes to fan panic...... Fight On! P.S. anyone have a sense of what the non-conference schedule might be like next season? I know we get a BIG 12 team at Galen...

The existing talent on this current team along with the new recruits is better then most we have had over 40 years. Floyd has consistently brought in top talent and is a very good coach. This is an exciting time for USC basketball and I hate reading some of the negativity here despite not even knowing how good our new recruits are or the maturation of our existing players. I,for one,am very anxious to see this team come fall. Fight On!

Posts: 1093 05/02/09 7:10 AM	Those with the history of the ups with McKay and John Robiunson I and the downs with Larry Smith, John Robinson II and Paul Hackett can appreciate what Pete Carroll has done for USC. Only those without that historical understanding carp about losing an occasional game and choice of coaches , strategies, etc. The same is true for what TIm Floyd has done in his tenure compared to the sporadic triumphs of Morrison, Raveling, and Bibby. Tim, like Pete has elevated our expectations, and with it causes the periperal result of pessimism that it can continue, and attracts drive-by snipers that are concerned he is getting USC towards the top. Look around the PAC-10 and UCLA loses Collison, Shipp, and Aboya; ASU loses Harden and Pendergraph; UA loses Hill and Budinger and maybe Nic Wise; UW loses Brockman and Dentmon; WSu loses Rochestie, Baynes and Harmeling. These are good starters. Turnover happens every year and USC isnt the only school to which this happens.

ASU returned everyone from the previous year. Same with UW and now CAL this year. What about WSU 2 years ago with Weaver, lowe, etc...and Oregon 2 years ago with Harrison, Lunen, Taylor, Brooks. where is USC in this mix? Once in a while a school will get a lot of upperclassman leadership, as shown above, but not USC. The mentality of this board is that Floyd if doing better than it was before. Thats true, but that same mentality will keep USC in the middle of the pack, inside of winning pac-10 titles. Reloading will not get you far in the tournament. Teams with experience and upperclassman make deep runs. Getting players to stay, learning the offense and gaining experience is the key to winning. NOT RELOADING.

Posts: 78 05/04/09 1:54 AM	Dwight was the team's leading scorer, and he's coming back. USC actually has a history of retaining its leading scorer for at least one more season. Mayo was the exception. Like Mayo, DeMar is one-and-done, but he didn't lead the team in scoring. Dwight outscored DeMar against both Boston College and Michigan State. UCLA lost Love after freshman season, Westbrook and Farmar after soph seasons, Afflalo and Luc Richard after junior seasons. UCLA could have used Afflalo vs. Memphis in that 2008 Final Four game, because they couldn't hit shots in the second half. North Carolina could have used Brandan Wright in their Final Four game vs. Kansas, when Darrell Arthur and Sasha Kaun were flying to the hoop in the first half. And Kansas wasn't supposed to have Brandon Rush, but his injury caused him to stay. Just saying, there is no blueprint that can be followed, and elite teams play the "what if" game as well.
